Territorial Approach to Adaptation to Climate Change

Population growth and the effects of climate change increase the competition for natural resources in the semi-arid Turkana and Marsabit counties. In these regions, most of the population makes a living from semi-nomadic livestock herding, small-scale irrigated farming or fishing. In addition, food security is at risk by other issues such as safety, and a lack of marketing structures, productive infrastructure, and institutional capacities.

Together with the Kenyan public sector offices, the project Territorial Approach to Adaptation to Climate Change in North East Kenya (Energy & Climate Fund) aims to strengthen the capacity of the responsible county-line ministries in Marsabit (MoALF and MoWE) and Turkana (MoPEF, MoAW and MoEENR) for sustainable management of natural resources relevant to food. The goal is to enhance the adaptive capacity and strengthen climate change resilience to improve the livelihoods and incomes of pastoralists, agro-pastoralists, and settled inhabitants of Turkana and Marsabit Counties and fishermen of Lake Turkana.
