Support for Efficient and Effective Energy Management
Jordan is among the world’s most water-scarce countries. As a result, wells, pumping stations, and treatment plants consume large amounts of electricity. Over the past nine years, energy consumption in the water sector has risen by 37%, electricity tariffs by 281%, and electric bills by 355%. Today, electricity costs account for over 50% of water and wastewater operations, and with rising tariffs, this is expected to reach 75% in the coming years.
Water losses due to physical leakages, illegal connections, and incorrect billing further strain the sector, exacerbated by a growing population and refugee influx. The project “Support for Efficient and Effective Energy Management within the Jordanian Water Sector”, aims to introduce an Energy Management System (EnMS) aligned with ISO 50001 to improve energy efficiency and integrate renewable energy solutions. The long-term goal is to secure Jordan’s water future through capacity building and infrastructure investments, focusing on water supply, wastewater, energy for water, and governance.
