Reforestación: Cruzada Verde en Regiones
Peru is losing approximately 150,000 hectares of forest every year to deforestation – one of the highest rates in Latin America. Compounded by the effects of forest fires, agricultural encroachment, and rapid urbanisation, this loss threatens biodiversity, weakens ecosystem services, and accelerates climate change at a regional and global level. Urban centres such as Lima simultaneously face a critical deficit of green spaces and tree cover, exacerbating heat island effects and reducing quality of life for millions of residents.
Operating under the EU's Framework Contract for Sustainable Environmental Action (FWC SEA 2023, Lot 2), Dorsch Impact, in a constortium with Particip, implements the Cruzada Verde reforestation initiative across three distinct geographic areas: the San Martín Region, the Province of Cusco (districts of San Jerónimo and San Sebastián), and Metropolitan Lima. The project directly supports Peru's national commitments to ecological restoration and aligns with the country's contributions to the UN Sustainable Development Goals.
The project engages local municipalities, regional environmental authorities, agricultural associations, indigenous communities, and educational institutions.

Project Activities
Institutional Component
- Planning and coordination: Conducting structured meetings with local authorities, municipalities, and regional bodies including the Regional Environmental Authority (ARA) and EDUCCA Programme offices, to define methodologies, delineate intervention areas, and secure institutional follow-up commitments.
- Stakeholder engagement: Engaging district municipalities in San Jerónimo, San Sebastián (Cusco), and Yantaló (San Martín), as well as indigenous communities and agricultural associations, to ensure locally grounded implementation.
- Equipment and tools delivery: Delivering equipment, materials, and supplies to the Regional Environmental Authority of San Martín and to the Environmental Management Offices of the municipalities of San Jerónimo and San Sebastián, strengthening their operational capacity for continued environmental stewardship.
- Environmental awareness: Organising participatory tree-planting activities with students from local educational institutions, integrating environmental citizenship into school programming.
Technical Component
- Reforestation and silvicultural management:
- Establishing a 1-hectare pilot plantation with native species at the ZOCRE Morro de Calzada Ecosystem Conservation and Restoration Zone in Yantaló, San Martín.
- Planting 4,000 seedlings at the CRFA educational institution in San Martín.
- Planting 1,000 trees in the Cusco Region: 500 in the community of Ccorao (San Sebastián) and 500 in the Usphabamba Agricultural Association (San Jerónimo);
- Additional 2,000 seedlings planted in San Sebastián, exceeding the original target.
- Delivering 150 ornamental Jacaranda mimosifolia trees to the Metropolitan Municipality of Lima for urban greening.
- Managing full plantation operations, including land preparation, pit digging, application of compost and hydrogel, replanting, and procurement of certified native seedlings from accredited nurseries.
