Promotion of Agro-Ecological Cropping Systems (PAESOL)

The Promotion of Agro-Ecological Cropping Systems and Soil Protection (PAESOL) project aims to enhance the sustainability and resilience of rainfed family farming in Mali, addressing the impacts of climate change through responsible soil and water resource management based on agro-ecological and conservation principles. The objectives include reducing rural poverty, improving food and nutritional security, and supporting inclusive economic growth by enhancing employment and entrepreneurship opportunities for women and young people.
The project is built on two pillars: disseminating good agricultural practices tailored to local conditions to conserve soil, improve fertility, balance water use, and substitute mineral inputs with biological ones; and implementing soil and water conservation and agroforestry measures to stabilise, recover, and protect land. Expected results include the development of strategies for promoting agro-ecological and, soil and water conservation approaches, operational knowledge transfer systems, improved local supply chains for seeds and bio-inputs, investments in soil and water conservation, and a shift towards agro-ecological agricultural practices. Principles such as participatory planning, solar energy use, labour-intensive methods, and climate change adaptation guide the implementation.
