Mainstreaming Biodiversity into Agrarian Landscapes
Population growth, changing consumption patterns, and increased demand for food and natural resources are expanding agricultural areas and intensifying production globally, and Kenya is no exception. This often neglects the value of ecosystem services and the costs of their degradation. Kenya’s agriculture, dominated by smallholdings of up to 3 hectares, employs 40% of the population and provides livelihoods for 70% of rural residents. Ecosystems in agro-ecological zones face varying levels of vulnerability due to human activities.
The implementation of the global project Biodiversity and Ecosystem Services in Agricultural Landscapes aims to strengthen individual and institutional capacities to integrate biodiversity and sustainably manage ecosystem services in agricultural landscapes. It is part of the International Climate Initiative (IKI) under Germany’s Ministry for Environment (BMUB) and includes global activities and country-specific actions in Kenya, India, and Tajikistan. In Kenya, it collaborates with the Ministry of Agriculture, Livestock, and Fisheries to improve agrobiodiversity discussions, enhance training, and promote sustainable practices and policies.
