Energy Efficiency and Renewable Energy Programme
With the continuous rising of electricity costs in Tunisia, the operation of wastewater water treatment plants (WWTPs) is becoming increasingly expensive for the national sanitation utility ONAS. Consequently, and within the framework of the German financial cooperation with the Republic of Tunisia, this project aims to increase the energy efficiency of around 12 wastewater treatment plants in the North department (El Fahs, El Kef, Korba), Centre department (Enfidha Hergla, Kairouan II, Monastir Frina, M’saken) and the South department (Djerba Aghir, Médenine, Sfax Nord, Tataouine) as well as in the greater metropolitan area of Tunis (Choutrana II).
The project will contribute to increasing the share of renewable energy in the global mix as well as the rate of improvement in energy efficiency, thus ensuring greater sustainability of water infrastructure, and a reduction in global warming pollution.

Project Activities
The planned investment measures for the energy optimisation of the wastewater treatment plant (WWTPs) include new mechanical and electrical equipment such as the installation of energy saving aeration systems, or the replacement of pumps and motors, combined in part with the necessary rehabilitation works of the WWTPs. In addition, investments will be made to produce electricity from biogas in cogeneration plants and from photovoltaic panels installed in WWTPs.
The technical assistance package for the Tunisian National Sanitation Utility includes four missions:
Mission A: Preliminary, detailed design and preparation of tender documents.
Mission B: Assistance during tendering and contract negotiations with contractors.
Mission C: Construction supervision.
Mission D: Assistance during the 1st year of operation.
