Adaptation to Climate Change and Resource Conservation
The Adaptation to Climate Change and Resource Conservation in the Waza-Logone Wetlands project contributed to the joint programme by GIZ and the Federal Institute for Geosciences and Natural Resources (BGR) to strengthen the Lake Chad Basin Commission’s (LCBC) competence in managing transboundary water resources. The GIZ module focuses on improving water resource management in the transboundary wetland Waza-Logone with three key outputs. The first is support for LCBC’s Executive Secretariat. The second is the operationalisation of a regional management structure. The third is the implementation of water management measures in an intervention zone.

Project Activities
- Output 1: Operationalising the LCBC’s Lake Information System (LIS), including support for data acquisition, preparation of monitoring reports, and implementation of the LCBC’s communication strategy. Activities include training and capacity-building measures related to data acquisition, LIS, and integrated water resource management (IWRM).
- Output 2: Supporting the establishment of a regional partners forum and the development of a “hot spot” map. This includes delineating the intervention zone in the Waza-Logone wetlands, identifying key challenges, and creating maps.
- Output 3: Identifying, planning, and implementing climate change adaptation measures for 3,250 households engaged in farming, livestock, and fisheries. Activities involve developing terms of reference, selecting beneficiaries (e.g., farmer cooperatives), conducting Farmer-Field-School (FFS) training, monitoring project activities and indicators, providing agricultural advice, distributing adapted seeds, and disseminating best practices through handbooks, workshops, and other channels. Adaptation recommendations have also been developed for LCBC member countries.
